Certain keyboards brands/models are supposedly made to withstand the rigors of constant, heavy use. They are designed to keep liquids, dirt and -- most important -- microbes out. Seamless, nonporous, rubber construction not only makes the keyboard waterproof, but is effective in controlling viruses, microbes and MRSA pathogens that populate the board and possibly cause sickness.

These keyboards are rugged. They can handle repeated cleanings with 10% bleach solutions, alcohol and chemical disinfectants. Cleaning has never been quicker or easier since there are no cracks or crevices. Time is of the essence in healthcare; these keyboards can be cleaned and ready for use in minutes.

The silicone (100% latex-free) design makes them ergonomic, durable, comfortable and easy to use. These keyboards are also built to be silent when used, yet still offer the superior tactile feedback people have come to expect from conventional keyboards.

Finally, these keyboards can be customized to 14 languages.

But ... Being Washable is Just the Beginning

Cracks and openings in competitors’ keyboards make them vulnerable to the accumulation of bacteria and contaminants. Space between and underneath keys make perfect hiding spaces for microbes that can’t be fully reached when cleaned or disinfected. The key shaft beneath key caps is an open invitation for fluids, (including liquids such as blood) to pool. Residue that can’t be seen on the board’s dark surface can’t be cleaned.

The spaces between keys also increase the time and effort required to clean. A quick wipe down doesn’t mean it’s clean and air drying takes hours. When a patient’s life is dependant on medical equipment being available, waiting hours for keyboards is impractical.

Because these keyboards are “waterproof” doesn’t mean that they are clean! It just means that they are supposed to withstand liquids. Improper seals on the exterior surface may allow liquids to enter and severely damage the circuit board. The potential for mechanical failure of the keys can really affect reliability.

Some keyboards don’t have the same customization options and they only offer limited warranties. Also, unnecessary multimedia keys can increase technical support issues.
