In the manufacturing industry each rotating machine has its own unique vibration signature. Changes in its behavior (for example: that caused by unbalance or bearing damage) usually leaves a dynamic "fingerprint".

One of the fundamentals of predictive maintenance (aka condition monitoring) is the focussed, early detection of damage through vibration analysis so that potential machine failure (and downtime) is prevented.

Critical industrial hardware such as pumps, spindles, compressors, fans, gears and motors can be monitored by vibration analysis.
