Essential EMC Tools: Broadband / Wideband preamp

A preamplifier is often used with EMC measurement antennas. The gain may be around 24 - 26 dB and the frequency range is 1 MHz to 1024 MHz. The input is type N male which interfaces directly with most antennas. The SMA female output is connected to spectrum analyzer via an SMA male-male cable.

When the spectrum analyzer is used this way it's uncalibrated since the antenna factor of the measurement antenna is not known. The EMC engineer may the calibration herself by downloading the data through the serial port to a PC and then adding the antenna factor to the measurement data.

This measurement approach is provided for experienced compliance lab personnel that want to use a portable spectrum analyzer for far-field measurements. Some accessory antenna and probes, shown below, are perfect for pre-compliance measurements.

Self-powered Preamplifier module (attached to the antenna itself) increases sensitivity by 24 - 27 dB:
