ESD (electrostatic discharge) in Metal Enclosures

Above: Illustration of the coupling of an ESD discharge to an electronic circuit for (a) metal enclosure with apertures and (b) plastic enclosure.

Failure Modes due to (electrostatic discharge)

Above: Direct discharge into circuit; Direct discharge into ground system; Indirect discharge

Solutions:

  • Common failure modes: change of instrument state (front panel control), CPU reset, instrument lockup, loss of data.
  • Use shielding, reroute cables, separate receptor circuits.
